Week three, the best week yet!
Delays, fire drill, department meeting, poultry practice, banquet supplies ordering, classes, practice wiring, alumni meeting, class shopping, snow, lesson plans, flexibility, breakthroughs, engagement, learning names, making connections, getting to know people, planning, schedule changes, activity homerooms, student make-up work…. a typical week as an Ag Teacher!

What happened this week
Well a lot… it was a great week… a week full of challenges and learning.
Heres what I have learned this week… in no particular order
1. Electricity really isn't that hard, I can teach it and I can wire the schematics once I put my mind to it, and get help from my cooperating teachers.
2. There will always be those challenging students, but thats what its all about, that is what makes it worth it, getting through to those students or making those connections. I still have some challenging students that I have not gotten through to, but I am working on it.
3. Everyday is different, something that I continue to see and love.
4. It feels great to have your first real day of teaching, what do I mean by first real day? On Wednesday I had the first day where it truly felt like it was my class and I felt confident teaching the material, my students were engaged, excited, and I felt like they were truly happy to be there.
5. Today I gave my safety exam for electricity and had a few students that missed a question, which meant I had to talk to them and give them a plan of action for success on their next attempt. At this point I felt that I have built enough of a relationship with my students that we could handle this chat and make sure they knew that it was ok, not to worry, all was well.
6. This week I completely revamped my electricity unit, and unlike the first unit I planned this one was easy to maneuver and change because the concepts were the same, I just realized a better approach to teaching them.
7. Some times a habit is hard to break and you have to respect that, a student may not be trying to be disrespectful, perhaps they just don't even realize it, or maybe they are fooling me… but I don't think so.
Finally this week I understood the power of feeling comfortable in the classroom, I finally felt comfortable truly interacting with my students that I was excited to praise them and be able to joke around with them… this changed the dynamic of the classroom.
To my readers, this week was a jumble of awesomeness, a jumble of learning and preparing for the next steps that are quickly approaching. This blog is rather scattered, but thats what its all about, picking and choosing the right pieces to complete the puzzle.
Till next time...
Your growing comfort in the classroom is evident, and the smiles from you and the kids are showing relationships being built. I appreciate you taking the challenge of "selling" SAE to the group in AFNR. Great job this week!
ReplyDeleteWell, if Neil is happy with how things are going, I certainly am. Yes, every day is different. Yes, sometimes we just need to throw out something that is not working and design something else that works. So you are now "reading" the class and reacting to it and changing your plans accordingly. That is great! The puzzle may be coming together!
ReplyDeleteVery well done.
