First Day Student Teaching, Farm Show, and a Snow Day

What a day it has been!

My first day of student teaching, a memorable day, when I asked what the game plan was for the day I was in short instructed to show up, get on the bus, and attend the Farm Show field trip. Even for this I was extremely nervous, but what’s better than a day at the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

The day however did not go like this at all. By 5:00 I was notified that we were having a 2-hour delay and the farm show trip was still a go, with us departing 2 hours latter. The next text message I received was a new update that notified me that the school was closed due to the icy road conditions.

My first exciting day as a student teacher just turned into a snow day... but what do Ag teachers do on snow days... We go to the Farm Show, the FFA Mid- Winter Convention would still go on weather we had a school closing or not.

I had the easy part, being a student teacher I just had to find someone who would go to Farm Show with me. One of the other Ag teachers had the challenge of calling the students parents, and letting them know that the students would still receive their first year jackets and Keystone degrees, but the teachers were unable to take these students due to the closing.

We left for Farm Show around 10:00 and entered the building shortly after 11. It was strange to be back in this familiar territory but in a completely different role, the student teacher that did not officially start yet. We hit the food court and then headed to the swine show to find my cooperating teacher. As we headed that way we say several familiar faces, which all proceeded to give me a hard time about my " challenging" first day as a student teacher.

We eventually ended up at the FFA Mid- Winter Convention where we anxiously waited to see if any of our students would be able to receive their jackets or degrees in person today. It wasn't long before we had seen all of our Keystone recipients. It was odd to be there in the capacity as their student teacher. I wasn't sure that these students would recognize me, even though we spent a week at National Convention together. To my delight they did remembered me and we were able to have a few laughs about the trip that seems to have occurred forever ago.

As the convention began I found myself standing on the arena floor offering up my help as needed. Once things were rolling and degree names were being called another student teacher and I were patiently awaiting our student’s names to be recognized.

Although I had no impact or direction on these students achieving this high honor I was still excited for the chapter that I will call mine for the next 15 weeks.

Overall today was a typical day in the life on an Ag teacher, without the whole student and teaching part... that will be here soon enough.
